The interim government lifted the ban on Jamaat-e- Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir on Wednesday.
‘It (lifting of the ban) will come under effect immediately,’ the home ministry said in a gazette notification.
The notification said the ban slapped on August 1, 2024 under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009 was lifted as there was no particular evidence and neither the government believed that Jamaat and its associate bodies including the Chhatra Shibir are involved in terrorist activities and violence.
The notification was signed by home ministry’s senior secretary Mohammad Abdul Momen.
On August 1, the previous Awami League (AL)-led government banned Jamaat, Shibir, and all of its associated organisations as political entities under the Anti-Terrorism Act-2009.
On August 5, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled the country in the face of a mass uprising against her AL government.
