Members of the Indian Border Security Force killed a 33-year-old Bangladeshi man near the Paharpur border adjacent to the Jashpur BGB camp in Goliara union of Cumilla Sadar upazila on Monday.
The deceased, Kamal Hossain, was the son of Idu Mia and a resident of village Jolai Kuriapara in Sadar upazila.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Iftekhar Hossain, the BGB-10 commander, confirmed the incident.
Kamal’s brother, Hiron Mia, said that BSF personnel shot at Kamal at about 7:00 pm. Following the shooting, BSF took his body away in an Indian ambulance.
When contacted regarding the retrieval of Kamal’s body, the Jashpur BGB camp company commander advised the family to wait.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Iftekhar Hossain further noted that Kamal had reportedly crossed about 25 yards into Indian territory. ‘We believe he was shot by BSF,’ he said.
‘Efforts are ongoing to contact BSF, and discussions concerning the return of the body are expected to take place today,’ he added.
