The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday reinstated Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s appeal challenging the High Court verdict that had upheld the cancellation of its registration as a political party by the Election Commission.
A four-member bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, restored the appeal that was dismissed for non appearance of Jamaat lawyers on November 19, 2023.
According to Jamaat’s lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Manir, if the appeal is successful, Jamaat-e-Islami will regain its registration, allowing the party to contest in national elections.
Shishir Manir, stated that the party will now seek an expedited hearing date for the appeal.
