HC upholds death penalty for 5 JMB men in Jhalakathi PP killing case

The High Court on Monday upheld the death sentence of five operatives of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for killing public prosecutor of Jhalakathi Advocate Haider Hossain in 2007.

The HC bench of Justice Soumendra Sarker and Shahed Nuruddin delivered the verdict after holding hearing on the death references and appeals filed by the convicts.

The convicted death awardees are Murad Hossain of Khulna, Tanvir Hasan alias Mehedi Hasan and Belal Hossain of Barguna, and Amir Hossen and Sagir Hossen of Dhaka.

Earlier on February 11, 2015, a Jhalakati court awarded death penalty to the militants in public prosecutor Haider Hossain murder case.

According to the prosecution, the convicts shot dead PP Haider near Koborsthan Masjid in the district town at night on April 11, 2007 while he was returning home after offering Isha prayers.

Haider was public prosecutor in a case filed against seven JMB members for killing two judges in Jhalakathi on November 14, 2005.
