Amid the countrywide anti-rape protests, rape incidents and sexual harassment are still taking place in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, Chattogram and Narayanganj.
A mob beat up a schoolteacher for allegedly sexually assaulting a second grade student at Shipahibagh in Dhaka Monday night.
Md Farukur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khilgaon police station, confirmed the incident, and said the teacher was handed over to the police immediately after the beating.
The accused was identified as Abu Salek.
Salek allegedly sexually assaulted a girl who went to him for private tuition, the OC, said, quoting the family of the minor.
The victim’s family is set to file a case over the incident with Khilgaon police station.
Police detained the suspect early Tuesday.
In Chattogram, a teenager girl has reportedly been gang-raped at a residential hotel in Sitakundu upazila.
Police arrested seven people including the hotel manager in connection with the incident.
The arrestees are—Alim Hossain, 22, Mohammad Rifat, 19, Mohammad Emon Islam, 20, Rony, 20, Barek, 22, Nayan, 22 and Nur Uddin, 38, the manager of Jalsha Hotel.
Sumon Banik, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sitakundu Model Police Station, said the victim of Mirsharai upazila met Nayan a month ago in a marriage ceremony and relationship of love developed between them.
On Saturday, Nayan asked the girl to come to Sitakundu.
After visiting a tourist spot in Sitakundu, Nayan along with friends took the girl to the hotel in the name of taking rest.
Later, they confined the girl to a room of the hotel and raped her three times. He went out of the hotel to bring food at 10am.
Then he came back to the hotel with five more youth and raped her till 1:30am.
However, the girl managed to flee from the hotel around 2pm.
As the girl informed police about the incident on Monday morning, police arrested seven people conducting drives in different areas of the upazila.
Process is under way to file a case, said the OC.
Meanwhile, police on Monday arrested a man for allegedly raping two sisters in Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj upazila.
The girl’s father on early Tuesday filed a case in connection with the rape which had taken place in Mizmizi Kandapara area on October 5. The accused is Abu Bakkar 40, a building caretaker at Kandapara, where the girls were allegedly raped. The elder sister is 14 years old while the youngest is 12.
Siddirganj police station Officer-in-charge (OC) said they are interrogating the rape suspect. The two sisters had a quarrel with their father on the night of October 5 and left their house, he added.
They sought refuge with Abu Bakkar who gave them shelter at his house as he was known to them.
He then raped them and fled the scene, OC said. “My daughters used to call Abu Bakkar “Nana” (grandfather) as he is known to us and lives in the same area.”
Siddirganj police station Sub-Inspector Alamgir said, “Although the incident took place on October 5, the family had been trying to go for mediation with the building owner due to social stigma. But the building owner dismissed their complaints. Locals informed the police on Monday night after they came to know of the matter.
Soon after, the law enforcers arrested the suspect in a drive, sub-inspector added.
People from all walks of lives had been staging demonstration in the capital and elsewhere in the country for the last several days over the growing incidents of rape and sexual harassment against women.
In Barishal, a housewife, who was allegedly gang-raped by three people, tried to take her own life in Mehendiganj upazila here on Monday.
Quoting locals, Sazzad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kazirhat Police outpost in Mehendiganj, said the victim, aged about 17, got married three months ago and lived at her father’s house in Andharmanik village of the upazila as her husband worked in the capital.
The housewife had an extramarital affair with one Babu of Hizla upazila.
On Sunday, Babu took the victim to his house where he along with his two friends raped the girl.
When the news came to light, local UP member Param Bhuiya arranged an arbitration where he asked the three culprits to provide Tk 20,000 as compensation to the victim.
Failing to bear the humiliation, the victim drank poison in a bid to kill herself.
Later, the victim was taken to Hizla Upazila Health Complex.
