29 Bangladeshis freed from Pakistan jails to return home tonight

A total of 29 Bangladeshis, who were freed from Malir and Karachi jails of Pakistan, will return home on Wednesday night at the initiative of the foreign ministry.

The ministry disclosed the information in a press release on Wednesday.

However, more eight Bangladeshis freed from Malir jail of Pakistan under Sindh province will return home Thursday.

According the the press release, these eight Bangladeshis were working in an Omani fishing boat legally. But in May 2019, Pakistani Coast Guard arrested them as their fishing boat entered into Pakistani maritime boundary due to strong current while they were fishing in the Arabian Sea.

Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen supervised an initiative of bringing them back to home in the quickest possible time.

He also approved their airfare and other expenses from the government fund considering their economic situation, said the ministry.

Bangladesh deputy high commission office in Karachi maintained regular communications with the interior ministry of Sindh province and Malir jail authorities to ensure their release.

International Organisation for Migration and Bangladesh Red Crescent Society helped in their repatriation process.

The repatriation of Bangladeshi citizen stranded in Pakistan resumed on November 25 after eight years under the initiative of the foreign ministry.

Five Bangladeshi citizens have returned home from Pakistan recently after the repatriation process began.
