Ex-OC Pradeep, his wife gets different jail terms in corruption case

A divisional special judge’s court in Chattogram on Wednesday sentenced Teknaf police station’s former officer-in-charge and condemned murderer Pradeep Kumar Das to 20-year imprisonment and his wife Chumki Karan to 21-year imprisonment in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for their alleged involvement in amassing illegal wealth.

Judge Munsi Abdul Majid of the court passed the order on Wednesday afternoon, ACC public prosecutor Mahmudul Hoque told New Age.

‘The court sentenced Pradeep Kumar Das to total 20-year imprisonment and his wife Chumki Karan to total 21-year imprisonment,’ the prosecutor said.

The court also ordered to seize the duo’s all properties and fined them Tk 4.21 crore, he said.

Teknaf police station’s former officer-in-charge Pradeep Kumar Das and his wife Chumki Karan were accused in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission over amassing wealth of about Tk 2,35,98,419 from unknown sources and hiding information about wealth of about Tk 59,58,957.

ACC’s assistant director Md Riaz Uddin filed the case against Pradeep and his wife Chumki Karan on August 23, 2020.

ACC investigation officer submitted the charge sheet against Pradeep Kumar Das and his wife Chumki Karan before the court of Chattogram Senior Metropolitan Session Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahaman in July 2021.
