Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Dhaka south city unit acting member secretary Tanveer Ahmed Robin was arrested by plainclothes police at nightingale crossing in the capital on early Sunday.
BNP senior joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the members of the Detective Branch of police arrested him around 12:30am after he came out of the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Khondkar Nurunnabi, joint commissioner of police (cyber and special crime and DB-North), confirmed that they had arrested Robin.
Earlier at an unusual press briefing at 3:00am at BNP’s central office, Rizvi alleged that the DB police picked up Robin when he was going home by a motorcycle from the party office.
He said that Robin’s family members went to the DB office to inquire about him, but the on-duty officers were not admitting the arrest of the BNP leader.
Even though the DB police picked up 6 Chhatra Dal leaders on Friday, Rizvi said the law enforcers did not admit it. ‘Later, they were shown arrested with weapons. This is the condition of the law enforcement agencies.’
He demanded the immediate release of Robin.
Rizvi said that the members of the DB police took position near the BNP’s central office on Saturday night and arrested at least 15 party leaders and activists who came out of it.
BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy visited the party office at midnight hearing the news of the arrest of the BNP leaders and activists by the DB police.
Rizvi along with many other party leaders and activists stayed overnight at the office to avoid arrest.
Robin, son of former BNP lawmaker and the party’s commerce affairs secretary Salahuddin Ahmed, was made acting member secretary of BNP’s Dhaka south unit on June 6 last.
His father was also arrested by the DB police on August 3 last in the capital’s Jatrabari area.
