The authorities have recently started using the Demerit Point System for violating traffic rules according to the Road Transport Act 2018.

At a press briefing held on Tuesday, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder said that they had recently started using the system of cutting points from driving licence.

According to the system, out of total 12 points, if a driver’s 8 points are cut off, the licence will be suspended; and if a driver loses all the 12 points, the licence will be cancelled.

‘We are cutting the points now manually. An app is being developed in this regard,’ the chairman said.

‘Once the app will be introduced, all data of demerit points will be shown in the app,’ he added.

The law was enacted in September, 2018.

The new law came into effect on November 1, 2019 amidst work abstention and strike by transport workers across the country.

On Tuesday the authorities organised the briefing to observe the National Safe Road Day 2023, which will be held on October 22, at its head office in the capital.

The day would be observed with different programmes across the country, Nur Mohammad said while addressing the briefing.

‘To improve the situation on roads a social movement is necessary,’ he added.
