Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Aricha highway remained suspended for several hours on Thursday morning as a protest erupted in the capital’s Gabtali area following a road accident that killed a female cleaner on early Thursday.
The protesters left the highway at about 9:30am following assurance of justice and compensation at a meeting mediated by the police.
Mofizur Rahman Palash, the assistant commissioner of Darussalam Zone, Mirpur Crime Division, said that a pickup van hit Dhaka North City Corporation cleaner Amena Begum, 45, near the inter district bus terminal in Gabtoli at about 5:45am. She died on the spot.
He said that they arrested the driver of the pickup van, Nazmul Islam, in this connection.
Followoing the accident, several hundred cleaners blocked the highways causing traffic congestion.
They staged demonstration for several hours demanding risk allowance.
