A man was burnt to death and eight others were injured as an oil tanker overturned and several vehicles caught fire on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Nazrul Islam, 45. Details about him could not be known immediately.
The injured are — Milon Molla, 22, Al-Amin, 35, Nironjan, 45, Helal, 30, Abdus Salam, 35, Sakib, 24, Md Al Amin, 22, and Mim, 10.
Of them, Helal and Sakib sustained 100 per cent burn injuries, Milon 45 per cent, Mim 20 per cent, Al Amin 10 per cent, Nironjan 8 per cent, Abdus Salam 5 per cent and Md Al Amin 15 per cent.
They are undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said the institute’s resident surgeon Md Tarikul lslam, adding that Nazrul succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital.
Witnesses said that the oil tanker overturned and caught fire when it hit a road island on the Aricha-bound lane in Jordpul area at about 5:30am.
The fire spread fast engulfing a car, a cement-laden truck, a watermelon-laden truck and a lorry.
On information, six firefighting units from Savar and Hemayetpur rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control, said Savar Fire Service and Civil Defence station master Nurul Islam.
Dhaka district’s traffic inspector (admin) Shahidul Islam said that vehicular movement resumed in the area at about 9:00am, three hours after the damaged vehicles were removed.
Earlier, vehicles were seen stuck on both sides of the highway due to the accident, he added.
