The High Court on Monday criticised the random detention of individuals and feeding them at the Detective Branch (DB) office, labelling it a mockery of the nation.

During a hearing on a petition seeking a directive on the release of six quota reform coordinators currently in custody of DB, the High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon said, “Don’t mock the nation. You cannot bring and sit them at a dining table.”

They made the remarks on the publication of photos showing the six coordinators of the quota reform movement being taken to the DB office and fed there.

A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Monday morning seeking its directive to the law enforcement agencies not to shoot protesters from Monday and release of six quota coordinators from the custody of DB.

Lawyers Manjur Al Matin Pritom and Aynunnahar Siddika Lipy submitted the petition.

Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police and the Army Chief have been made respondents to the writ, Assistant Attorney General Anis Ul Mawa said.

Notably, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) chief Harun-or-Rashid posted several photos on Facebook on Sunday, depicting him sharing a breakfast table with the six coordinators of the quota reform movement.
