A Dhaka court has summoned former shipping minister Shajahan Khan to appear before it in a Tk 100-crore defamation case filed against him by popular film actor and road safety campaigner Ilias Kanchan on Wednesday.
Judge Utpal Bhattacharjee of the Second Joint District Judge’s Court of Dhaka passed the order after taking cognizance of charges against incumbent Awami League lawmaker from Madaripur 2 constituency Shajahan Khan.
Earlier on Wednesday, founder of Nirapad Sarak Chai movement Ilias Kanchan filed the defamation case against Shajahan Khan. Supreme Court lawyer Md Rezaul Karim filed the case on behalf of Kanchan with Joint District and Sessions Judge’s Court. Then, Judge Utpal Bhattacharjee fixed Thursday for hearing.
According to case statement, on December 8 last year, Shajahan Khan at a programme in Rupganj made offensive and abusive remarks about Ilias Kanchan.
Shajahan, also transport workers’ leader, said: “I’d disclose it to the people how Ilias Kanchan gets money and for what purpose, how much money he takes for himself and how much for his son and daughter-in-law.”
