A Dhaka court has ordered to send former SP Babul Akhter to jail in the Digital Security Act and Special Powers Act case filed by Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) chief Banaj Kumar Majumder.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid passed the order.
Sub-Inspector Shariful Islam of Dhanmondi Police Station confirmed the matter to media on Saturday (November 12).
He said that after the one-day remand on Friday, Babul Akhter was brought to the court. Following the plea of the investigation officer of the case, the judge ordered him to be jailed.
Last Thursday (November 10) when the hearing began on the seven-day remand plea made by the police in presence of Babul Akhter, the lawyer of the accused filed a bail petition seeking cancellation of the remand. At the end of the hearing of both parties, the judge rejected the bail prayer and granted a one-day remand.
That morning, Babul Akhter was produced in Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court from Keraniganj Jail. Later Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashek Imam granted the prayer regarding his arrest in the case.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, Inspector (Operation) Rabiul Islam of Dhanmondi Police Station filed a petition seeking a seven-day remand for Babul Akhter last Wednesday, stating three reasons, including proper investigation of the case. The court fixed Thursday to hear the matter in presence of the accused. The court also ordered to put him on remand after showing his arrest on the same day.
