Former chief hangman of Dhaka Central Jail Shahjahan Bhuiyan passed away at a hospital in Bangladesh capital Dhaka early Monday. He was 74.
He was declared dead at Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital at about 5:30am by the hospital doctors who said that Shahajahan was brought to the hospital dead, said Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station inspector (investigation) Sajib Dey.
Earlier on June 18, 2023, former chief hangman of Dhaka Central Jail Shahjahan was released after serving 32 years in prison.
His sentence was commuted to 32 from 42 years for his good works in prison. He was arrested in 1991. He was then kept at Manikganj jail.
Shahjahan was born in 1950 at Isakhali village at Palash upazila in Narsingdi.
According to the prison source, Shahjahan was an experienced hangman who executed 26 death-row convicts in different prisons of the country in the past including the much-talked about killers of Bangladesh’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four war criminals.
He was convicted in two criminal cases. He was awarded 12 years’ jail in 1992 in an arms case. He was jailed for 30 years in another case.
